Know Myself ° Understand Others™
Art Journals for Self Awareness and Bully Prevention
The seventh grade students at the H.T Wing school in Sandwich, MA participated in an innovative program to discover things about themselves and learn strategies intervene and prevent bullying. They met weekly throughout the Spring semester and added their voice to discussions, produced thoughtful written work and created art journal pages. Many students spoke of a transformation that occurred during the process.
This program was funded through the Community Outreach of Cotuit Center for the Arts with additional support from Cape Cod 5. Let their words and images speak.

I have been taught so much and it has left an influence on me in many ways. Bullying is a challenge but its not impossible to defeat it, all it takes is that one change. You taught us that we could be that one change instead of another in the crowd.

With the journals, everybody learned something new about themselves. You gave us confidence and made us encouraged to do good, and change something for the better. It made everyone feel artistic even when something else was their strength.
RE
Your coming here really showed me that bullying is a serious problem and if we see it happening to someone,, we have to take a stand to stop it. Also, along with bullying you have taught us so many things about ourselves and more importantly how to become the person that we want to be. I have set new goals for myself for things that I would like to accomplish. It really helped me to write down what is important to me and what I value and strive to do everyday.

Knowing Myself * Understanding Others Lessons in Empathy

Seventh grade students completed a capstone project in Art Journals for self-awareness and bully prevention at the Barnstable Intermediate School, thanks to a Department of Elementary and Secondary Education grant.
For the past ten weeks I have been involved in a remarkable project at the Barnstable Intermediate School in Hyannis. Barnstable Public Schools, English teacher Patti Buss and I were fortunate to be awarded a Federal Grant administered by Learning Support Services: Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education: Anti-Bullying Service-Learning Project for an innovative approach to the problem of bullying. Together we developed a program using writing and art for seventh grade students to reflect on themselves as unique individuals and develop empathy for other people’s differences as well.
Each student created a variety of art journal pages to explore the topic of their individuality. Over the course of the service learning program they thought, discussed, wrote about and created art on the following topics.
Self awareness, Goal Setting, Power of Words, Bullying Awareness, Self Discovery, Inspiration, Self Empowerment, Motivation, Non-verbal Communication, Slogans, Courage, Being the Change, Being True to Yourself
The student’s reflections gave powerful endorsements to this art journal project.
During the art journal project and watching PSAs, I learned a lot more about cyber bullying and it hurting others a lot. I noticed some things I put online aren’t so nice. I had no clue I was even doing that.
I think the Art Journals were an amazing experience. I pushed myself to do things I didn’t I could do. And I was learning about bullying at the same time. It is a great chance to express yourself and not be afraid of what other people will think. It really triggered a change in me. I realized that even your words hurt, not just punches or physical actions. I have been thinking about what I am going to say before I say it .
What I learned from this experience with the art journals is that you should really express yourself and find out who you really are inside. And I also learned that bullying is a very big issue and that there are many ways to prevent it and if we all come together we can really make a difference in the world.
The program was a natural fit with the district’s current anti-bulling program, Second Step. It also emphasizes empowering the bystander, one of the keys of reducing bullying from Stan Davis a nationally recognized anti bully specialist and district consultant.
The pilot program had a BIG impact on one team of100 students. We are currently looking for ways to fund this program so it can be offered to all seventh graders in the Barnstable Intermediate School for the 2011-2012 school year. If you are interested in contributing to this program please contact Lenore Lyons, Arts Education Coordinator at the Cotuit Center for the Arts.
We give our gratitude to Karen Stonely, Principal of BIS and Bobbi Moritz, Grants/Project Development for their ongoing support and enthusiasm for the project.
Please consider a donation to continue this innovative approach to anti-bully education.
