A KeyStory is a small piece of art created by people of all ages who respond to the question,
What does your key open or start or do?
What does your key open or start or do?
Materials
The standard paper for the project is heavyweight (140lb.) watercolor paper cut into 5.5 inch squares. My favorite is Canson XL, I buy 11 x 15 and cut it to size. There is the least waste this way. I get 4 squares per sheet for 120 pieces per pad. I spray the squares lightly with ink. Many people are afraid of plain white paper. They think they will wreck it. So I do that in advance and both kids and adults are more comfortable. (We will also accept 4" x 6 " postcards)
Stickers
I provide blank mailing labels, size 2" x 4". Folks can draw their key on this sticker and then look at how they want to position it on the paper. You can skip this step and draw directly on the paper. Either way is fine.
Markers
I am a real fan of Sharpie® markers. They have vibrant colors that don't fade easily, they are familiar and make people comfortable. People write larger when they use a Sharpie® and that makes it easier for others to read. Other art supplies are fine to use but permanent markers are best. Avoid work in pencil, pastel or crayon, these do not hold up well in exhibits. Please no 3D work, keep it flat.
Keys
Lots of people have used keys around, you just need to ask. I put an ad in the local paper and was amazed at the response. It was like folks were waiting to be asked. Before the project, plan to "neutralize" the keys. Take off al the rings, mix them up and I always wash them. Please send us any keys that you don't need, we will be sure to use them.
Take a look at an easy way to draw a key.
Participation Form
Please print out a participation form and attach it to the reverse of your KeyStory. This allows us to include your important ideas in future exhibits, publications and media. We use 3.5" x 5" mailing labels. 4 up form here
